Afternoon Farmhand

Barstow's Longview Farm in Hadley, MA cares for 600 head and milks 300 cows with five robotic milkers for the Cabot AgriMark Cooperative.
Afternoon farmhands assist with afternoon fetching of cows for the robot milkers and feeding ~30 calves. Duties include cleaning stalls, scraping alley ways, fetching and handling cows, preparing milk for calves, feeding calves, cleaning equipment and facilities, and handing farmstand trash, recycling, and compost. He/she is responsible for proper animal handling, basic maintenance, and some record keeping. Follow-up animal care as prescribed by the herdsperson is also required.
The two primary roles of the afternoon farmhand are essential to the health and nutrition of our cows and the cleanliness of the milk produced on the farm. This work is hard but rewarding, contributing directly to cleaner, happier, healthier, and well cared for animals.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Stand and walk for up to 3 hours
  • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • Accurately follow directions
  • Gently and patiently handle cows
  • Driving farm trucks within farm boundaries
  • Work in all weather conditions and temperatures
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Hard worker

DUTIES

  • Fetch and handle adult dairy cows
  • Scrape manure from alley ways and stalls
  • Prepare and portion milk for calves
  • Feed ~30 calves from buckets
  • Clean and sanitize calf feeding equipment
  • Perform follow-up treatment as directed by herdsperson
  • Remove farmstand trash, recycling, and compost
  • Other duties as assigned
RELATIONSHIPS
Supervised by the herdsman owner. Works closely and maintains communication with other afternoon farmhands, herdsman, and farm owners.HOURS
Part-time position. We are looking for coverage on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Afternoon farmhands report at 3pm and are typically done by 6pm. Please apply with your availability listed.COMPENSATION

Barstow's is a sixth and seventh generation family owned and operated business. Our farm and farm stand are located in the Hockanum Rural Historic District and frequented year round by families, commuters, farmers, seniors, students, hikers, foodies, and more. All are welcome here!

Barstow's Longview Farm cares for a herd of 600 dairy head, milking 300 cows. Our motto on the farm is "Looking Forward Since 1806." We are a part of the Cabot Agri-Mark Cooperative, use Lely Astronaut4 Robot Milkers to milk our herd, and raise all of our own forage on 450 acres. The health, safety, comfort, and welfare of our animals is our first priority.

Barstow's Dairy Store and Bakery opened its doors to the public in June 2008. The motto at the store is "Absolutely local, absolutely delicious!" We are a Local Hero Farm, purchasing groceries and ingredients from nearby farms and food producers. We are a "fast casual" restaurant and bakery focused on providing quality food, excellent customer service, and being actively involved in our community. Our employees do more than just safe food handling, they are also ambassadors for our dairy farm, the dairy industry, and the Barstow family name.
