Complete and submit your Dairy Crawl Passport by June 30 to be entered to win!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nWe farmers have been friends and neighbors for generations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe all face similar challenges – development of farmland\, difficulty finding reliable labor\, and razor thin profit margins. SUMMARY:World Baking Day
DESCRIPTION:While the rest of her tow-headed siblings and cousins were following around the farmers\, you could find Shannon in the Farmhouse.  And more specifically\, you could find her in the kitchen with her Grandmother. \nGeneration 7 know her as Grandma\, but you might know her as Marjorie Shipman Barstow.  Grandma baked for therapy and cooked for love.  The farmers made the Farmhouse a regular stop for a slice of pie.  The grandchildren buzzed around the kitchen hoping to be offered a chocolate chip cookie. \nGrandma kept a diary of her life beginning at age 13.  The entries recount her daily routines\, doing the wash\, mopping the floors\, visiting with family\, baking cookies\, pies\, or cakes.  In October of 1994 she notes that she’s made 10\,000 cookies so far – just in that year. \nShannon acted as sous chef and eager student.  Grandma rarely had her recipes written down\, so Shannon paid special attention to ingredients and methods. \nAs a teen\, Grandma invited Shannon up to learn her apple pie recipe.  She encouraged her granddaughter to enter the pie into the 3 County Fair. \nShannon won the blue ribbon at the fair with her grandmother’s apple pie recipe.\nGrandma was thrilled! \nToday\, Shannon continues to prepare Grandma Barstow’s chocolate chip cookies\, apple pies\, and other family recipes at Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery. \nMarjorie Shipman Barstow passed away in March 2017\, but her love and legacy lives on in Shannon’s kitchen.  And we finally got those recipes down on paper to live on for generations to come!

DESCRIPTION:Pasture Day is a farm favorite!\nAnd for the first time since 2019\, it will be back as we love it most: in person\, with our community\, together again on the farmstand lawn. \nAfter inspecting and repairing fence\, the farmers are ready to let the girls out of the barn and into the field. Spring is here! And with winter months in the barn behind them\, the cows will be frolicking their way into the green green grass! \nThis event is not to be missed! \nGrab some lunch or some ice cream – and a spot on the hill!  The heifers are released at 1:00pm!\nWe’ll be offering a free walking farm tour at 11:30am. Please note we will not accommodate late arrivals! Wear boots that can get muddy. The walking tour is about 1/4 mile and involves hills and uneven terrain. \nLive music on the porch by Old Country Road\, noon-2pm. Free wagon ride farm tours after the cows are out! Wagon tours end at 3pm so the farmers can get to evening chores on time. \nThis is a free\, family friendly event at your local dairy farm! Hope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:March 22 is National Agriculture Day.\nHere at Barstow’s Longview Farm\, every day is Ag Day.  Agriculture isn’t only our livelihood\, it is a way of life. Today we invite you to consider how agriculture impacts your life. Farmers raise fruits\, veggies\, livestock\, trees\, and seafood. \nIn honor of Ag Day\, join us for a free walking farm tour at 1pm.\nTour begins at Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery on the porch and takes about 45 minutes.  The tour will visit the farm’s anaerobic digester\, bunker silo\, milking herd\, robotic milker\, and calf barn. Please wear shoes that can get muddy. \nRegistration is not required. We are unfortunately not able to accommodate late-comers so please plan to arrive on time! Visitors are not permitted to be on the farm without a guide. Tour is rain\, snow\, or shine unless Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery is closed for inclement weather. SUMMARY:Cows & Conservation: An Innovative Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the Barstow family worked with Kestrel and the Commonwealth to place an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) on 123 acres of their farmland\, preserving it forever. The Barstows reinvested the funds from the sale of the APR back into their 215 year-old dairy farm to secure its future. They purchased robotic milkers\, a tool that improves milk production\, animal health\, and farm efficiency. \nOn November 13 from 10 am to noon\, visit this innovative local dairy farm in Hadley with seventh generation family member Denise Barstow. She will take you on a tour of the farm to view the robot milkers\, dairy barn\, calf barn\, bunker silos\, and anaerobic digester—a system that converts cow manure and food waste into fertilizer\, heat\, and electricity for 1\,600 homes. You’ll also find out how APRs contribute to habitat\, sustainability\, heritage\, and farm viability. \nThis 0.5 mile walk includes some hills\, uneven terrain\, and mud. Please dress for the weather and wear shoes that can get dirty. The event will take place rain or shine. \nThis event is free\, but donations are welcome. Visit the participating farmstands; Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery\, McCray’s Country Creamery\, Flayvors of Cook Farm\, Maple Valley’s Hadley Scoop\, North Hadley Sugar Shack and Market\, and Smiarowski’s Farmstand and Creamery; and purchase an ice cream to get your Dairy Crawl passport stamped between June 1 and June 30\, 2021. \nWe farmers have been friends and neighbors for generations.\nWe all face similar challenges – development of farmland\, difficulty finding reliable labor\, and razor thin profit margins.  We borrow equipment from one another\, trade tips and feedback\, and lend a helping hand. While not all of the participating farmstands are dairy farms\, it is a longstanding tradition to support our neighbors and sustain agriculture in the Pioneer Valley. \nThe milk price is currently so low that it does not cover a dairy farm’s cost of doing business. DESCRIPTION:Place your orders for our March Winter Dinner on Tuesday\, March 23 between 3:30pm and 5:30pm!\nThe menu will feature our homemade chicken and biscuits\, mashed potatoes\, and green beans. For dessert\, a chocolate chip cookie\, fresh from the bakery! \nPlates are $14.50 each and $10.50 for kid’s sized plates. Need a farmer sized helping? $18.50 farmer plates also available. \nThis year\, advanced orders are required and our dining room will be closed at 3pm.
