Creating a sustainable building
We have made many efforts to keep our energy use as low as possible. Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery was built with many features that help it to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint.
Radiant heat
We have radiant heating through our floors. Heating the floors rather than the air is a more energy efficient system. Radiant systems use less fossil fuels than other systems, they are cleaner, and pollute less which in turn creates less acid rain and fewer greenhouse gasses than other systems.
Insulation
Barstow’s Dairy has super insulated extra thick walls, eighteen inch thick insulation in the attic, and energy efficient windows. All of which help to keep our energy use down, by keeping the heat in over the winter, and keeping the cool air in over the summer.
Fresh air heat exchanger
In addition to eliminate humidity build-up that causes mold, mildew and damage it also helps reduce heating and/or cooling costs because it is an energy saver.
LED lighting
Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery is equipped with LED lighting. LED lighting is a high efficiency, long lasting light source. Using LED lighting reduces greenhouse gases and other pollutants in the atmosphere by reducing the need for additional power plants.
Presby Enviro-Septic
The Presby enviro-septic protects the environment by purifying waste water before releasing it into the ground, effectively combining treatment and dispersal in one small footprint. Both soil and ground water are protected from contamination.
Solar capabilities
Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery was oriented very specifically, to allow for solar panels in the future.
Composting/Recycling
At Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery we are big supporters of the Go Green movement. We try to implement the “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse” policy whenever possible.

For example we compost just about everything we can. Non-edible food scraps, spoiled food, paper, and many compostable products. If you come into Barstow’s for breakfast, lunch, dinner, ice cream or treats from the bakery, you will notice that we use reusable utensils as well as compostable utensils and packaging. We are turning food throwaways and biodegradable products into decomposed material used for growing plants and conditioning lawns and gardens.

All of our coffee cups, plates, plastic cups, soup cups, plastic cutlery, bakery tissues, straws and togo containers are compostable. We use compostable packaging from Eco-Products, and Greenware made from plants not petroleum. By composting and reusing whenever we can, we create much less waste.
When you choose to compost, you will help improve our environment by providing materials that enhance the soil, help reduce pollution caused by the incineration of waste, and improve water-holding capacity. But most importantly, by composting, you help remove tons of waste from waste stream and water treatment plants and divert reusable matter from landfills.
