Milk from Feed: How does this happen?

June 14, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

Presenter: Mark Huyler, Ph.D. Senior Lecturer, UMass Amherst

Dairy cattle have the ability to convert feedstuffs into an exceptionally high quality product. Come learn about the critical relationship between the feed, the cow, and the mammary and how this results in the production of milk. Mark Hulyer received his Ph.D. from Washington State University and Postdoctoral Training from Washington State University.

June is Dairy Month! And all month we will be celebrating all things dairy – from cheese to yogurt, from ice cream to the good old fashioned glass of milk. But we will also celebrate by learning about dairy through the Dairy Month Lecture Series hosted by Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery and Barstow’s Longview Farm. Learn from experts and professionals about dairy nutrition, the dairy industry, sustainable farming, land use and open space, milk processing, and animal health. Join the conversation about the food in your fridge at your neighborhood farm! Tours begin and presentations are hosted at Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery (172 Hockanum Road).

Going to be late? Not a problem! Please don’t be deterred by arriving late to these presentations. Our speakers are prepared to have people arrive late and leave early – or to eat dinner while you listen!

Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery and Barstow’s Longview Farm is owned and operated by sixth and seventh generation Barstow’s. Nestled at the base of Skinner State Park and right alongside the Connecticut River, the dairy farm has been a part of the landscape since 1806.

Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery offers homemade baked goods and pies, lunch from local ingredients, farm fresh produce, farm raised beef, ice cream, and scenic views of protected farmland from the porch and dining room. This family friendly store is open daily year round. Come meet your neighborhood dairy farmer!
